Careers are not short term but are a lifelong thing. A person who joins any organization (government or private) will work there till his/her old age (on the average 30-35 years). In this article, we will compare the career path of SEBI Grade A (Assistant Manager) vs career path of RBI Grade B manager and will see which one is better in a longer run.
Comparison between RBI Grade B and SEBI Grade A/B officer
We will take RBI Grade B first, and then we will see SEBI Grade A (Assistant Manager) career opportunities.
RBI (Reserve Bank of India) is one of the most recognized central body in India. RBI is an autonomous body, whose job is determining key rates to be used in finance and banking sectors. These key rates form the backbone of fiscal and monetary policy of India.
SEBI (Securities and Exchange board of India) is an autonomous body to regulate securities market (different exchange board) and defining rules and policies for registered companies and investors. As we know, stock markets are important source of capital for companies; hence SEBI is an important organisation for public listed companies.
Remark: In term of level of impact and brand awareness, RBI score more than SEBI.
Work Profile comparison
RBI recruits for Grade B position and Assistant position directly. RBI Grade B position is managerial role in which main responsibilities is to execute the policy decisions (formed by higher management). Kindly note, you will not be making policies or be part of policy creation until and unless you are in Grade D and above. So if you intend to change rates from day 1, you will have to wait (At least 8-10 years) to be eligible to even suggest these changes to people taking final decision.
SEBI recruits for Grade A (assistant manager) position directly. In SEBI, your main work is to facilitate easy and fair trading practices, and to audit and track people who are using unfair means. Your job as SEBI Grade A officer will be more or less entry-level auditor or data analyst person. At starting it be more of back-end office work, but as you progress in career hierarchy, it will become more people-intensive work.

RBI Grade B officer
Pay Scale: Selected Candidates will draw a starting basic pay of Rs. 35,150/- p.m. in the scale of Rs. 35150-1750(9)-50900-EB-1750(2)-54400-2000(4)-62400 applicable to Officers in Grade B and they will also be eligible for Dearness Allowance, Local allowance, House Rent Allowance, Family Allowance, and Grade Allowance as per rules in force from time to time. At present, initial monthly Gross emoluments are approximately Rs. 67,933/- (approx.).
Perquisites: Bank’s accommodation subject to availability, reimbursement of expenses for maintenance of vehicle for official purpose, newspaper, telephone charges, book grant, allowance for the furnishing of residence, etc. as per eligibility. Free dispensary facility besides reimbursement of medical expenses for OPD treatment/hospitalization as per eligibility. Interest-free festival advance, Leave Fare Concession (once in two years for self, spouse and eligible dependents). Loans and Advances at concessional rates of interest for Housing, Car, Education, Consumer Articles, Personal Computer, etc. Selected candidates will be governed by ‘the defined contribution New Pension Scheme (NPS)’, in addition to the benefit of Gratuity.
SEBI Grade A officer
- Pay:The incumbent will be on a scale of pay of Officer Grade A in the scale of Rs.28150-1550(4)-343501750(7)-46600-EB-1750(4)-53600-2000(1)-55600 (17 years).
- Presently, the gross emolument including Board Contribution towards National Pension Scheme (NPS), Grade Allowance, Special Allowance, Dearness Allowance, Family Allowance, Local Allowance etc. at Mumbai at the minimum of this scale is approx.92,000/-p.m.without accommodation and Rs. 62,000/-p.m. with accommodation.
- Benefits: Other benefits viz., Leave Fare Concession, Medical Expenses, Financial Dailies, Book Grant, Briefcase, Conveyance Expenses, House Cleaning Allowance, Staff Furnishing Scheme, Scheme for Purchasing Computers, Subsidized Lunch Facility, and all other benefits as admissible to an Officer in Grade A in SEBI.
Remark: In our opinion, there is not much a difference in starting salary of both RBI Grade B and SEBI Grade A Assistant Manager.
Career ladder and growth path comparison
As, we have discussed earlier, RBI Grade B career ladder compromise of the following path
Grade B – C- D- E- F – Deputy Governor (end)
As you go up in this career ladder, you will become more and more famous and responsible. A person can only go up to deputy governor position. RBI governor is recruited from outside the organization.
SEBI also following same ranks and organization structure like RBI. Here also you will see the following pattern
Grade B – C- D- E- F –Executive Directors (end)
A person can only go up to an executive director position.

Work-life balance comparison
RBI has the most balanced work-life balance. SEBI work is more prone to make errors, so there are legal hassles involved sometimes.

A person working in the RBI will have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of economics and financial system. He/she can join IMF, World Bank or leading banks or consult as senior position.
A person working in SEBI will have strong knowledge of financial markets. He can join corporates and can help them in raising money from public.
