1.   On WEF energy transition index India ranks 78th.

WEF

A.    Lower than its emerging market peers like Brazil and China, among 114 countries on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) energy transition index, India has been ranked at 78th.
B.    On how well they are able to balance energy security and access with environmental sustainability and affordability the report titled Fostering Effective Energy Transition, ranks countries.
C.   Sweden topped the list followed by Norway at the 2nd position and Switzerland at the 3rd rank.

2.   In South Africa 17th World Conference on Tobacco held.

World Conference

A.    In Cape Town, South Africa from 7-9 March 2018 the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) was held.
B.    It united researchers, academics, non-governmental organisations, civil society, scientists, healthcare professionals and public officials working on all aspects of tobacco control from more than 100 countries.

 

3.   For pregnant woman LaQshya program to be announced.
A.    The launch of program ‘LaQshya’ has recently announced by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
B.    It is aimed at improving quality of care in labour room and maternity Operation Theatre (OT).
C.   Quality of care for pregnant women in labour room, maternity Operation Theatre and Obstetrics Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and High Dependency Units (HDUs) will be improved by the program.
D.    At all Medical College Hospitals, District Hospitals and First Referral Unit (FRU), and Community Health Center (CHCs) the LaQshya program is being implemented.
E.    It will benefit every pregnant woman and new-born delivering in public health institutions.
F.   Morbidity and mortality rate of maternal and newborn will be reduced by it.
G.    It will improve quality of care during delivery and immediate post-partum period.
H.    It will enhance satisfaction of beneficiaries and provide Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) to all pregnant women attending public health facilities.

 

4.   Harnessing solar power for rural India – KUSUM Scheme.

A.    Formulating a Scheme ‘Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM)’ the Government of India is in the process. It inter alia, provides for:
B.    Each of capacity up to 2 MW grid-connected solar power plants installation in the rural areas.
C.    To fulfill irrigation needs of farmers not connected to grid installation of standalone off-grid solar water pumps.
D.    To make farmers independent of grid supply and also enable them to sell surplus solar power generated to DISCOM and get extra income, existing grid-connected agriculture pumps solarization.
E.   Solarization of tube-wells and lift irrigation projects of Government sector.
5.   ABHY proposed by the government.
A.    Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY) has proposed by the government.
B.    At sustainable ground water management with community participation in select over-exploited and ground water stressed areas in seven States is the aim of the yojana.
C.    As a Central Sector Scheme ABHY is designed.
D.    With a total outlay of Rs. 6,000 Crore and is proposed to be implemented with World Bank assistance.

  

6.   Science Congress to be inaugurated by Modi.
A.   105th edition of the Indian Science Congress will inaugurate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Imphal on March 16.
B.    Congregation of about 5000 delegations including three Noble laureates, scientists, scholars and researchers from all across the country will be seen by the Science Congress.

  

7.   First all-woman branch of Karnataka Bank.
A.    Its first all-woman branch opened by Karnataka Bank at Bull Temple Road in Bengaluru.
B.    This is the 800th branch of the bank.
C.    Mahabaleshwara MS, Managing Director and CEO, Speaking on the occasion, said the bank opened 36 branches during 2017-18.
D.    A business turnover of Rs 1.06-lakh crore has registered by the bank.
8.   Best implementation of E-office: MDWS Bags Award.
A.   Dr Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation for implementation of e-office software.
B.    Shri Satyabrata Sahu, Joint Secretary and Mrs Seemantinee Sengupta, Senior Technical Director, HOD, NIC-MDWS received the award.
C.    They received award on behalf of the Ministry at a function held at the Ministry of Personnel, Grievances and Pension.
D.    One of the Mission-mode Projects under the Digital India programme: E-Office.
E.    The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has the distinction of making 100 percent use of e-Office.
9.   Payment of gratuity (Amendment) bill 2017 passed by Lok Sabha.
A.    To empower government to fix period of maternity leave and tax-free gratuity amount with an executive order the Lok Sabha has passed Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill2017.
B.    The Bill seeks to amend the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.

 

10.  Artificial heart with rocket technology developed by China.
A.   Artificial heart using rocket technology has developed by Chinese scientists.
B.    It is currently undergoing thorough testing experiments on animals.
C.   China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) and Teda International Cardiovascular Hospital in North China’s Tianjin jointly developed the heart.
11.  Bill to have two-tier panchayati raj passes by Arunachal Pradesh assembly.
A.    Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill 2018 passed Arunachal Pradesh Assembly.
B.     This bill passes to do away with the Anchal Samiti, the intermediate level of the three-tier panchayati raj system and set up a two-tier system in the state.
C.     As per 73rd Amendment of Constitution that enables state having less than 20 lakh population not to have intermediate level this is being done and Arunachal has population of 13.84 lakh.
D.    Three-tier panchayati raj institutions were set up in state in 2003, 2008 and 2013, and elections for next five-year term were due in April-May 2018.
