Agreements

1.   Delegation-level talks with Swaziland King Mswati III hold by President Kovind in Mbabane.
A. On a three-nation Africa visit, President Ram Nath Kovind, held delegation-level talks with Swaziland King Mswati III in Mbabane.
B. In the presence of President Kovind and King Mswati India and Swaziland signed two agreements on health and visa waiver.
C. With Order of the Lion, President Kovind was conferred the highest award of Swaziland.

2.   An emergency meeting on suspected use of chemical weapons holds by UNSC in Syria.
A. This emergency meeting was held at the request of the United States and 8 other countries.
B. Via a video link from Switzerland the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, took part in the meeting.
C. He denounced the alleged use of chemical weapons as a grave violation of international law.

 

Environment

3.   On Water, Environment and Climate Change a conference to begin in Nepal.
A. On ‘Water, Environment and Climate Change: Knowledge Sharing and Partnership’ an international conference will start in Kathmandu.
B. Department of Water Supply and Sewerage, Govt of Nepal in association with the Society of Public Health Engineers Nepal (Sophen) and Nepal Engineers Association organised the three day conference.
C. To bring together professionals, academicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, government and non-government institutions to discuss and deliberate on challenges, opportunities and strategies related to water and environmental issues is the basic objective of the conference.
D. Kathmandu: Capital.

4.   10 April: World Homoeopathy Day.
A. Ministry of AYUSH organised a two-day scientific convention in New Delhi on the occasion of World Homoeopathy Day, on 10-11th April 2018.
B. The chief guest at the function will be the Vice President Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu while Minister of State (I/C) for AYIJSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik will preside.
C. To commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder of Homoeopathy Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann this day is observed.
D. “Innovate: Evolve; Progress: Exploring Science since 40 years” is the theme of this convention.

5.   In Mumbai 8th Theatre Olympics Concludes.
A. The historic event 8th Theatre Olympics drew to a colourful close in Mumbai after a glorious run of 51 days across 17 cities of India.
B. Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu on 17th February 2018 inaugurated the 8th Theatre Olympics at the majestic Red Fort in New Delhi.
C. Under the theme “Flag of Friendship” this edition of Theatre Olympics brought together around 25,000 artists.
D. The event witnessed 450 shows from more than 30 countries performed across 17 cities.
E. The biggest international theatre festival, 51-day long 8th Theatre Olympics held in India for the first time.

 

National Affair

6.   Health Ministry banned over-the-counter sale of 14 steroid creams.
A. The Union Health Ministry has banned over-the-counter sale of 14 such products to prevent the indiscriminate sale of ointments containing steroids and antibiotics without prescription.
B. Under the Schedule H of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 the preparations were included.
C. With the Drugs Technical Advisory Board, the decision was taken following consultation which had recommended a ban on the sale of such creams without a prescription and also submitted their recommendations to the Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation.
D. Some ointments that have been banned are alclometasone, beclomethasone, desonide and fluocinonide.

Business

7.   Under RBI’s PCA Framework 11 public sector banks placed.
A. Under the PCA there are 11 weak PSBs out of the 21 State-owned banks at present which kicks in when banks breach regulatory norms on issues such as minimum capital, amount of non-performing assets and return on assets.
B. IDBI Bank, Bank of India, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Dena Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, United Bank of India, Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank are the 11 banks which are already under the NPA framework.

8.   Messi: tourism ambassador.

A. It has appointed FC Barcelona’s Argentine star Lionel Messi as an ambassador to promote responsible tourism said the UN World Tourism Organization.
B. As tourism that “helps maximise the sector’s benefits while minimising its potentially negative impact on the environment, cultural heritage and societies across the globe” the UN body defines “responsible tourism”.

Health

9.   To address vitamin D deficiency among youngsters FSSAI launches project dhoop.
A. To address rising incidence of Vitamin D deficiencies (VDD), particularly amongst the young people the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched ‘Project Dhoop’.
B. To encourage schools to shift their morning assembly to around noon-time, mainly between 11 am to 1 pm to ensure maximum absorption of Vitamin D in students through natural sunlight is the aim of the project.

 

Science and technology

10.  New source of global nitrogen discovered: Earth’s bedrock.
A. Over quarter of nitrogen on Earth comes from weathering of planet’s bedrock according to recently published study. For centuries, prevailing science indicated that all of nitrogen on Earth available to plants comes from atmosphere.
B. This study could greatly improve climate change projections.

  

International Appointments

11.  As chairman of Boao Forum Ban ki-moon elected.
A. As Chairman of Boao Forum for Asia replacing Japan’s Yasuo Fukuda former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was elected.
B. As vice-chairman former governor of People’s Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan was appointed.
C. During second session of annual Boao Forum, both the appointments took place  known as “Asian Davos” underway in China’s Hainan province.
D. Ban Ki-moon is South Korean diplomat and was eighth Secretary-General of United Nations from January 2007 to December 2016.
