For lakhs of students who dream of studying in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the JEE Advanced exam is more than just a test—it’s a gateway to some of the most prestigious engineering institutions in the world. And now, there’s good news for JEE aspirants aiming for admissions in 2025.

In a significant move to expand opportunities for students, the Government of India has approved the addition of over 1,300 new seats across undergraduate (BTech), postgraduate (MTech), and doctoral (PhD) programs at five of the newer IITs. These include IIT Bhilai, IIT Dharwad, IIT Jammu, IIT Palakkad, and IIT Tirupati. This expansion will be applicable for the 2025–26 academic year and is part of a larger plan to improve access to quality technical education across the country.

More Seats, More Opportunities for JEE Advanced Aspirants

Getting into an IIT has always been highly competitive. With limited seats and increasing number of candidates every year, the pressure on students has been immense. The decision to increase seats is a welcome step towards reducing this burden and allowing more deserving students to secure admissions through JEE Advanced 2025.

For the 2025–26 academic session, a total of 1,364 new seats have been added at these five newer IITs. Here is how the new seat distribution looks:

  • IIT Bhilai: 378 new seats

  • IIT Dharwad: 343 new seats

  • IIT Jammu: 251 new seats

  • IIT Tirupati: 199 new seats

  • IIT Palakkad: 193 new seats

These seats are spread across various programs, including BTech, MTech, and PhD courses, giving students more flexibility and choice in their academic journey.

Government Support and Budget Allocation

The expansion plan was formally supported in the Union Budget 2025–26, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a large-scale seat addition across IITs established after 2014. A total of 6,500 seats have been sanctioned under this budget, covering the five third-generation IITs that have shifted to their permanent campuses.

Interestingly, IIT Goa, although established in the same time frame, has not been included in this plan. The reason? It is still functioning from a temporary campus and will be considered for expansion once it transitions to a permanent one.

The move received final approval from the Union Cabinet on May 7, 2025, with a funding commitment of ₹11,828.79 crore. This financial push is meant not only for adding seats but also for upgrading classrooms, laboratories, faculty hiring, research infrastructure, and hostel facilities. It’s a holistic approach to enhancing the overall academic ecosystem of these institutions.

The seat expansion at new IITs is a step in the right direction. It reflects a forward-looking vision for technical education in India—one that prioritizes both access and excellence. For students, it means more chances to study in one of India’s best institutes and build a successful career in technology and research.

As we move toward the 2025–26 academic session, it’s encouraging to see such proactive steps from the government. With greater support for students and an increasing focus on academic infrastructure, the future of engineering education in India looks brighter than ever.
